Dietitian vs nutritionist: what is the difference?
Both give diet advice, and in Pakistan the two words are often used for the same job. In countries with strict rules, a dietitian is a regulated professional trained to treat medical conditions with diet, while the title nutritionist is broader and sometimes not regulated. Neither is automatically a medical doctor, so check the actual qualification.

What this means in Pakistan
In Pakistan people say "dietitian", "dietician", "nutritionist" and "diet specialist" for the same role, and Google searches show both words in nearly equal use. What matters is what the person actually studied. Look for a BS or BSc in human nutrition and dietetics (often with an MSc or MPhil) and experience in a hospital or clinic, and ask where they trained.
PM&DC registers medical doctors; it does not register dietitians. A dietitian who is also an MBBS doctor will have a PM&DC number for the medical degree, and that is a separate qualification.
Is a nutritionist or dietitian a doctor?
Usually no. Some nutrition professionals add "Dr" before their name because of a doctorate (such as a PhD, Pharm-D or Doctor of Nutrition). That is a real degree, but it is not the same as an MBBS physician who diagnoses disease and prescribes medicines. A good professional tells you plainly which degree they hold.
Which one should you choose?
- For a medical condition (diabetes, kidney disease, PCOS, thyroid, fatty liver, pregnancy complications): choose someone trained in clinical dietetics who works with your doctor.
- For general weight loss, healthy eating or sports: a qualified dietitian or nutritionist can both help. Look for a clear plan, honest targets and follow-up.
- For any of the above: avoid anyone who promises quick results or sells supplements as the plan. Read what a dietitian does and how to choose one.

Common questions
Is a nutritionist a doctor?
Not usually. A nutritionist or dietitian is a nutrition professional, not a medical doctor (MBBS), unless they separately hold a medical degree. Some use "Dr" because of a doctorate such as a PhD, or a Pharm-D or other doctoral degree. Always ask which degree the "Dr" refers to.
Are dietitians doctors?
No. Dietitians study nutrition and dietetics at university. They are health professionals, but a dietitian is not an MBBS doctor, and does not prescribe medicines.
Which is better, a dietitian or a nutritionist?
The title matters less than the qualification and experience. For a medical condition (diabetes, kidney disease, PCOS) choose someone trained in clinical dietetics with hospital or clinic experience. For general healthy eating, either can help if properly qualified.
Can a dietitian or nutritionist treat a disease?
They treat with diet, as part of care led by your doctor. They do not diagnose disease or prescribe medicines.
What is a dietologist?
It is an older or alternative word for a dietitian. The usage differs by country; in practice it means someone who plans diets. Check the qualification, not the word.
