What is a dietitian? Meaning, role and when you need one
A dietitian is a trained health professional who uses the science of food to plan what you should eat, both to stay healthy and to manage conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, PCOS and obesity. Unlike a general diet chart, a dietitian's plan is based on your health, reports, medicines and food habits.
Dietitian meaning
The word dietitian comes from diet, meaning the way we eat. A dietitian is a person trained at university in nutrition science, the body's response to food and how diet affects disease. In Urdu you will see it described as ماہرِ غذائیت; read the meaning in Urdu.

- Plans your diet. A written chart with meals, portions and timings, using the food your family cooks.
- Treats with food. Diet is part of treatment for diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, fatty liver, PCOS, gut problems and some cancers.
- Teaches. How to read labels, cook with less oil and sugar, handle weddings, Eid and Ramadan.
- Follows up. Reviews your progress and changes the plan when your weight, sugar or reports change.
- Works with your doctor. Shares the plan with the doctor and refers you back when you need medical care.

How to choose a good dietitian
| Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|
| Asks about your health, medicines, reports and routine first | Sends a plan without asking questions |
| States a university degree in nutrition and dietetics, and says where they trained | Will not say what qualification they hold |
| Promises a safe rate, such as ½ to 1 kg a week | Promises 10 kg in 7 days or a "guaranteed" result |
| Builds the plan on food you already cook | Insists on special powders, teas, shakes or packs |
| Tells you when to see a doctor and never says to stop your medicines | Tells you to stop or reduce medicines on your own |
| Follows up and adjusts the plan | Sells a one-time chart and disappears |
In Pakistan the title "dietitian" is not as tightly protected as in some countries, so checking the qualification yourself is worth the two minutes. See also: dietitian vs nutritionist.
Common questions
Dietitian or dietician: which spelling is correct?
Both appear in everyday use. "Dietitian" is the standard spelling used by professional bodies and most health guidance, and "dietician" is a common variant. They mean the same profession.
What is a dietitian in simple words?
A dietitian is a trained health professional who plans what you should eat to stay healthy or to manage a medical condition such as diabetes, kidney disease, PCOS or obesity. They turn medical and nutrition science into a practical meal plan for your own body.
What does a dietitian do?
They assess your weight, health, reports, medicines and food habits, set nutrition goals, make a personal diet chart, teach you how to follow it, and review your progress. In hospitals they also plan feeding for patients who cannot eat normally.
Do I need a dietitian for weight loss?
Not always, but a dietitian helps when previous diets failed, you have a medical condition, or you want a plan that fits Pakistani food and your routine. For people with diabetes, PCOS, thyroid or kidney disease, a dietitian is strongly advised.
What qualification should a dietitian in Pakistan have?
Look for a university degree in human nutrition and dietetics (BS or BSc, often followed by MSc or MPhil) and clinical or hospital experience. Ask for the name of the degree, the university and any professional membership, and check them.
Can a dietitian prescribe medicines?
No. A dietitian plans food and gives nutrition advice. Medicines are prescribed by a doctor. A good dietitian works alongside your doctor and tells you when to see one.
Is online dietitian consultation reliable?
Yes, for diet planning, if the person is qualified and asks about your health and medicines before giving a plan. Be careful with anyone who sends a plan without any questions.
