Seeds guide: pumpkin, sunflower, til and methi dana

One to two tablespoons of seeds a day is a good addition to a Pakistani diet. Pumpkin seeds (kaddu ke beej) give zinc and magnesium, sunflower seeds vitamin E, til calcium and iron, and methi dana soluble fibre that may slightly lower blood sugar. All are calorie-dense, so measure them.

How to use them at home

  • Pumpkin and sunflower seeds: roast lightly and keep in a jar; a tablespoon with evening chai instead of biscuits.
  • Til: sprinkle on salad, sabzi or chapati dough; til ka laddu is traditional but high in sugar, so keep it small.
  • Methi dana: soak a teaspoon overnight and drink the water in the morning, or add the seeds to daal and sabzi.
  • Mixed seed jar: pumpkin, sunflower, til, alsi and chia together; one tablespoon a day over dahi or oats.

Honest expectations

Seeds add useful minerals and fibre to a diet that is often short of both. They do not cure diabetes, thyroid problems, hair fall or infertility, whatever social media says. If you take medicines, especially for diabetes or blood thinning, mention any daily seed routine to your doctor. For blood sugar, the diet as a whole matters far more: see the diabetic diet chart.

See a doctor first if

  • You take diabetes medicines and want to use methi dana daily
  • You are pregnant and considering medicinal amounts of fenugreek
  • You have a known nut or seed allergy

Common questions

What are pumpkin seeds in Urdu?

Pumpkin seeds are "kaddu ke beej"; the shelled white kernels sold in Pakistan are usually called magaz. They give zinc, magnesium, iron and protein, about 55 calories a tablespoon.

What are the benefits of pumpkin seeds?

They are one of the better plant sources of zinc (important for immunity and skin) and magnesium, and give about 3 g of protein a tablespoon. Claims about curing prostate problems or boosting fertility are not proven; treat them as a nutritious snack, not a medicine.

Does methi dana lower blood sugar?

Some trials suggest fenugreek seeds, usually 5 to 10 g a day soaked or powdered, slightly lower fasting sugar and HbA1c. The effect is small and the studies are mixed. If you take diabetes medicines, tell your doctor, because the combination can push sugar too low.

What is til good for?

Sesame (til) is one of the few plant foods rich in calcium: a tablespoon gives roughly 90 mg, useful for people who avoid dairy. It also provides iron and healthy fats. Ground til (tahini) is absorbed better than whole seeds.

How many seeds should I eat a day?

One to two tablespoons in total. Seeds are nutritious but calorie-dense: 4 tablespoons can equal a chapati and a half. Count them in your day if you are losing weight.

Are seeds safe in pregnancy?

Normal food amounts of pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds are fine. Large medicinal doses of methi dana are not advised in pregnancy, so keep methi to normal cooking amounts and ask your doctor.
