HbA1c normal range, and how diet lowers it

A normal HbA1c is below 5.7%. From 5.7% to 6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or more means diabetes. Most adults with diabetes aim for below 7%. HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the last 2 to 3 months, so it changes slowly.

HbA1c ranges

HbA1cMeaning
Below 5.7%Normal
5.7% to 6.4%Prediabetes: high risk, and the best time to act
6.5% or moreDiabetes (confirmed with a repeat test or another test)
Below 7%Usual target for adults with diabetes

HbA1c to average blood sugar

Your HbA1c can be turned into an estimated average glucose (eAG), the number you see on a glucometer:

HbA1cAverage sugar (mg/dL)
5.7%about 117
6%about 126
6.5%about 140
7%about 154
8%about 183
9%about 212
10%about 240
11%about 269
12%about 298

Formula from the ADAG study: average glucose = 28.7 × HbA1c − 46.7.

How to lower HbA1c with Pakistani food

  • Lose 5 to 10 percent of your weight if you are overweight. This is the strongest diet step for type 2 diabetes.
  • Same carbohydrate, same times: one chapati or ½ plate rice per meal, at regular times, matched to your medicines.
  • Half the plate sabzi and salad, a quarter protein (daal, chicken, fish, eggs, dahi).
  • No sugary drinks: juice, cold drinks and sweet chai raise sugar fastest.
  • Walk 10 to 15 minutes after meals. It lowers after-meal sugar noticeably.

The full plan is on the diabetic diet chart page. If your HbA1c is in the prediabetes range, the same steps often bring it back to normal.

See a doctor first if

  • Your HbA1c is 6.5% or more and you have not been diagnosed
  • Your HbA1c is above 9% or rising on medicines
  • You have frequent low sugars even though your HbA1c looks good
  • You are pregnant or planning pregnancy

Common questions

What is the normal range of HbA1c?

Below 5.7% is normal. 5.7% to 6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or more on a laboratory test means diabetes. For most adults who already have diabetes, the target is below 7%.

What does HbA1c show?

It shows your average blood sugar over the last 2 to 3 months, because sugar sticks to red blood cells, which live about 3 months. One high or low day does not change it much.

How fast can HbA1c come down with diet?

Because it reflects about 3 months, change shows best after 3 months. With weight loss, a regular diet, walking and the right medicines, many people with type 2 diabetes lower their HbA1c by 0.5 to 1.5 percentage points or more. Never stop medicines on your own to "test" diet.

How often should HbA1c be checked?

Usually every 3 months while your treatment is changing or you are above target, and every 6 months once it is stable at target, as your doctor advises.

Can anaemia or thalassaemia affect HbA1c?

Yes. Iron deficiency, thalassaemia trait, recent blood loss or transfusion, pregnancy and kidney disease can make HbA1c falsely high or low. Thalassaemia trait is common in Pakistan, so tell your doctor if you carry it; fasting and after-meal sugar readings are then used alongside.
