Ramadan diet plan for weight loss, with sehri and iftar
In Ramadan, weight loss depends on iftar and sehri, not on the fast itself. Break your fast with dates and water, then eat a balanced plate instead of fried food; have slow-digesting food at sehri; drink about 8 glasses of water between iftar and sehri; and walk after iftar.
6 rules for a healthy Ramadan
- Break your fast with dates and water. Then pause. Your stomach needs a few minutes before a full meal.
- Make dinner a normal plate. Half sabzi and salad, a quarter protein (daal, chicken, fish, egg), a quarter chapati or rice.
- Keep fried food for one day a week. Pakoras and samosas at every iftar can add 500 to 800 calories.
- Do not skip sehri. Skipping it leads to weakness and then overeating at iftar.
- Drink water in the evening, not only at iftar. Aim for about 8 glasses between iftar and sehri.
- Walk 20 to 30 minutes after iftar. It helps digestion and keeps muscle during weight loss.

Medicines and Ramadan
If you take regular medicines, especially for diabetes or blood pressure, ask your doctor before Ramadan how to change the timing. Ideally book this check 6 to 8 weeks before Ramadan (IDF-DAR advice). People who take insulin, sulfonylureas or SGLT2-inhibitor tablets (for example empagliflozin or dapagliflozin) are at higher risk of low sugar, dehydration or ketoacidosis while fasting and need a plan from their doctor first. Do not skip or double doses on your own. Read the diabetes diet chart for general food guidance.
Check your BMI
Uses the Asian BMI ranges, which are lower than the Western ones because health risks start at a lower weight in South Asians.
BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not separate muscle from fat, and it is not used in pregnancy.
Send my BMI to a dietitianTalk to a doctor and dietitian before fasting if
- You have diabetes, especially on insulin or sugar tablets
- You have kidney disease, heart disease or are on dialysis
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are under 18, or you are elderly and frail
- You get dizzy, faint or very weak when you fast
In these cases a general chart can be wrong for you. Book an online consultation.
Ramadan diet: common questions
Can I lose weight in Ramadan?
Yes. Many people lose 1 to 3 kg in the month, especially if they avoid fried food and sweets at iftar and do not overeat at sehri. Others gain weight because iftar becomes a feast. What you eat between iftar and sehri matters more than the fast itself.
What should I eat at sehri to stay full all day?
Choose slowly digested food: oats or daliya, chapati with egg or daal, dahi, and plenty of water. Avoid very salty food, parathas and sugary drinks, which make you thirsty and hungry sooner.
How should I break my fast?
With 2 to 3 dates and water, as is the Sunnah. Pause for prayer, then eat a balanced plate. Starting with fried food and cold drinks on an empty stomach commonly causes acidity and bloating.
How much water should I drink between iftar and sehri?
About 8 glasses spread through the evening, a glass every 30 to 60 minutes, not all at once. Tea, coffee and cola make you lose water; limit them.
Is exercise safe during Ramadan?
Light to moderate exercise is safe. A 20 to 30 minute walk 1 to 2 hours after iftar works well. Intense workouts are better after iftar than before it.
I have diabetes. Can I fast?
Only after talking to your doctor before Ramadan. Fasting with diabetes, especially on insulin or sulfonylurea tablets, can cause dangerously low or high sugar. If your sugar drops below 70 mg/dL or goes above 300 mg/dL, you should break your fast. See the diabetes diet chart for general guidance.
