Hemoglobin normal range: men, women, children and pregnancy
A normal hemoglobin (Hb) is about 13.5 to 17.5 g/dL in adult men and 12 to 15.5 g/dL in adult women, depending on the lab. WHO calls it anaemia below 13 g/dL in men, below 12 in women and below 11 in pregnancy. Low Hb is a sign, not a diagnosis: the cause, most often iron deficiency, decides the treatment.
Normal hemoglobin range for adults
| Group | Usual lab range | Anaemia (WHO) below |
|---|---|---|
| Men | 13.5 to 17.5 g/dL | 13.0 g/dL |
| Women (not pregnant) | 12.0 to 15.5 g/dL | 12.0 g/dL |
| Pregnant women | Lower, because blood volume rises | 11.0 g/dL (10.5 in the second trimester) |
Lab ranges differ a little between machines, so compare your result with the range printed on your own report. Some reports use g/L: divide by 10 to get g/dL (120 g/L = 12 g/dL).
Hemoglobin cut-offs by age (WHO 2024)
A level below these numbers counts as anaemia:
| Age group | Anaemia if Hb is below (g/dL) |
|---|---|
| Children 6 to 23 months | 10.5 |
| Children 2 to 4 years | 11.0 |
| Children 5 to 11 years | 11.5 |
| Children 12 to 14 years | 12.0 |
| Women 15 years and older (not pregnant) | 12.0 |
| Men 15 years and older | 13.0 |
| Pregnancy, first and third trimester | 11.0 |
| Pregnancy, second trimester | 10.5 |
Why anaemia is so common in Pakistan
The National Nutrition Survey 2018 found anaemia in about 4 in 10 women of child-bearing age and more than half of children under five. The usual reasons are a diet low in well-absorbed iron (little meat, lots of chai with meals), heavy periods, repeated pregnancies close together, worms and stomach infections, and thalassaemia trait, which runs in many families.
Ferritin and iron profile: finding the cause
Hb shows that you are anaemic; other tests show why. Your doctor usually looks at:
- MCV and MCH on the CBC report: small, pale red cells point to iron deficiency or thalassaemia trait; large cells point to B12 or folate deficiency.
- Ferritin: your iron stores. Below 15 µg/L means iron deficiency (WHO); with infection or inflammation, below 70 µg/L can still mean low iron.
- Iron profile: serum iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation; a saturation below about 20 percent supports iron deficiency.
- B12 and folate, and Hb electrophoresis if thalassaemia trait is possible.
How to raise hemoglobin with food
- Eat haem iron most days: beef or mutton (lean), liver once a week (not in pregnancy), chicken, fish and eggs. Haem iron is absorbed 2 to 3 times better than plant iron.
- Pair plant iron with vitamin C: daal, chana, lobia, palak, saag and dried apricots with lemon, tomato, amrood or kinnu in the same meal.
- Move chai away from meals: drink tea at least 1 hour before or after food; tannins block iron.
- Keep calcium separate from iron tablets: milk and calcium tablets reduce iron absorption if taken together.
- Treat the cause: heavy periods, worms or a stomach infection need a doctor, or the Hb falls again.

See a doctor first if
- Your Hb is below 8 g/dL, or below 7 g/dL in pregnancy
- You feel breathless at rest, have chest pain, a fast heartbeat or faint
- You pass black stools, vomit blood or have very heavy periods
- You have lost weight without trying, or are over 50 with new anaemia
- Your child is pale, tired and not growing well
Common questions
What is the normal hemoglobin level for a female?
For adult women who are not pregnant, most labs report about 12 to 15.5 g/dL as normal. WHO calls a level below 12 g/dL anaemia. In pregnancy the cut-off is lower: below 11 g/dL in the first and third trimester, and below 10.5 g/dL in the second.
What is the normal hemoglobin level for a male?
For adult men, most labs report about 13.5 to 17.5 g/dL as normal. WHO calls a level below 13 g/dL anaemia. Your report shows your own lab's range, which can differ slightly.
Is 10 or 11 hemoglobin dangerous?
It is anaemia, and it needs a cause to be found, but it is usually not an emergency. WHO grades 8 to 10.9 g/dL as moderate anaemia in adults (10 to 10.9 is mild in pregnancy). Below 8 g/dL is severe and needs a doctor soon. Breathlessness at rest, chest pain or fainting need urgent care at any level.
How can I increase hemoglobin fast?
If the cause is iron deficiency, iron tablets or an iron drip prescribed by a doctor raise haemoglobin by about 1 to 2 g/dL in 3 to 4 weeks. Food alone works more slowly but keeps levels up afterwards: eat meat, liver, chicken, fish or eggs, plus daal, chana and green leaves with lemon or a fruit, and keep chai away from meals. If the cause is not iron (for example B12 deficiency or thalassaemia trait), iron will not help.
What is a normal ferritin level?
Ferritin shows your iron stores. WHO uses a ferritin below 15 µg/L (below 12 µg/L in children under 5) as iron deficiency in healthy people. Infection or inflammation raises ferritin, so in those cases a ferritin below 70 µg/L in adults (30 in young children) can still mean low iron.
What is an iron profile test?
An iron profile usually includes serum iron, TIBC (total iron binding capacity), transferrin saturation and ferritin. In iron deficiency, ferritin and transferrin saturation are low (saturation below about 20 percent) and TIBC is high. Your doctor reads these together with the CBC.
Why is my hemoglobin low but my ferritin normal?
Other causes include thalassaemia trait (common in Pakistan, often with a low MCV and a high red cell count), vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, kidney disease, long-term inflammation and blood loss that has just started. Taking iron without proven deficiency does not help and can harm, so ask about Hb electrophoresis or B12 and folate tests.
What does high hemoglobin mean?
Common causes are smoking, dehydration, living at high altitude and some lung or heart conditions. Rarely it is a bone marrow condition called polycythaemia. A high result should be checked by a doctor, especially with headaches, itching after a bath or a raised platelet count.
