Iron-rich foods and anaemia: symptoms and a diet chart

The best iron sources in a Pakistani kitchen are kaleji, beef and mutton, daal, chana, lobia and palak. Eat them with lemon, tomato or fruit for vitamin C, and keep chai at least an hour away from meals. Women need about 18 mg of iron a day, men about 8 mg, and pregnant women about 27 mg.

Why anaemia is so common in Pakistan

Pakistan's National Nutrition Survey 2018 found that about 4 in 10 women of reproductive age and more than half of young children are anaemic. Common reasons: monthly blood loss, pregnancies close together, diets low in meat, tea with meals (which blocks iron), worms, and inherited conditions such as thalassaemia trait.

How to absorb more iron

  • Add vitamin C to meals: squeeze lemon on daal and salad, eat amrood, kinnow or tomato with lunch.
  • Drink chai and coffee at least an hour before or after meals, not with them.
  • Take calcium tablets and milk away from iron-rich meals or iron tablets.
  • Combine a little meat or chicken with daal or sabzi; it improves iron absorption from the plant food.

Anaemia diet chart (one day)

  • Nashta: 1 egg, 1 chapati, a kinnow or amrood. Chai one hour later.
  • Lunch: 1 katori daal with lemon, palak or methi sabzi, salad with tomato, 1 to 2 chapatis.
  • Evening: roasted chanay with a fruit.
  • Dinner: beef or mutton salan (small portion) or chicken, with sabzi and 1 chapati. Kaleji once a week if not pregnant.

Women who are also trying to lose weight can combine this with the weight loss diet plan for women.

See a doctor first if

  • You are breathless, dizzy, or have chest pain or a fast heartbeat
  • You have heavy periods, black stools or blood in stool
  • You are pregnant (anaemia needs treatment, not only diet)
  • Anaemia comes back after treatment, or you know you carry thalassaemia trait

Common questions

What is anaemia in Urdu?

Anaemia means "khoon ki kami" (خون کی کمی): too little haemoglobin in the blood, so less oxygen reaches the body. Iron deficiency is the most common cause in Pakistan, but not the only one.

What are the symptoms of iron deficiency?

Tiredness, weakness, pale skin and eyelids, breathlessness on stairs, fast heartbeat, headaches, cold hands and feet, hair fall, brittle or spoon-shaped nails, and cravings for ice, clay or chalk. A blood test (CBC and ferritin) confirms it.

Which foods are highest in iron?

Kaleji (liver), red meat, daal, chana, lobia and palak. Iron from meat and fish is absorbed best. Iron from daal and sabzi is absorbed better when eaten with vitamin C (lemon, tomato, amrood, kinnow) and without tea.

Do dates and pomegranate increase blood?

Not much. Five dates or a cup of anar seeds have only about 0.5 mg of iron. They are healthy foods, but daal, chana, meat and kaleji give far more iron.

Should I take iron tablets?

Only after a blood test and on your doctor's advice. Thalassaemia trait, common in Pakistan, can look like iron deficiency on a CBC, and extra iron does not help it. Take iron tablets with water or juice, not with tea or milk.

How long does it take to recover from anaemia?

With iron treatment, haemoglobin usually rises within 2 to 4 weeks, but iron stores take about 3 months to refill. Food alone corrects mild deficiency slowly; moderate or severe anaemia needs treatment.
