Pregnancy diet plan: a Pakistani diet chart for each trimester

A pregnancy diet plan does not mean eating for two. It means better food: protein at every meal, green sabzi and fruit, boiled milk or dahi for calcium, iron-rich daal and meat, and folic acid as your doctor prescribes. Extra food is needed only later in pregnancy, about one small meal a day.

  • You are carrying twins
  • You vomit so much that you cannot keep food down
  • You have anaemia or were told the baby is small
  • You were underweight or overweight before pregnancy

In these cases a general chart can be wrong for you. Book an online consultation.

Pregnancy diet: common questions

Do I need to eat for two in pregnancy?

No. In the first three months you need no extra food. Later in pregnancy you need only a little more, roughly one extra small meal or snack a day. Eating double leads to too much weight gain.

Which supplements do I need in pregnancy?

Folic acid is recommended from before conception until 12 weeks. Iron and calcium are often prescribed later. Take only what your gynaecologist prescribes, in the dose prescribed.

Which foods should I avoid in pregnancy?

Raw or half-cooked eggs and meat, unboiled milk, unwashed fruit and vegetables, and street food that may not be fresh. Limit chai and coffee to about 2–3 cups a day.

Is it safe to diet to lose weight in pregnancy?

No weight-loss diet should be started in pregnancy without your doctor. If you are overweight, a dietitian helps you limit weight gain safely while the baby gets what it needs.
