Weight loss after pregnancy: a diet plan for new mothers

After delivery, give your body six weeks to heal and wait for your check-up. Then lose weight slowly, about ½ kg a week, with regular home meals, protein, iron and plenty of fluids. If you breastfeed, avoid crash diets: feeding uses extra energy and most mothers lose weight gradually without harming milk supply.

When to start, after normal and C-section delivery

First six weeks: this time is for healing, rest and feeding, not dieting. Eat regular meals, drink enough, and walk a little each day as you feel able.

After your post-natal check-up: most mothers can start a gentle plan and build up walking. After a C-section, wait until your doctor confirms the wound has healed before abdominal exercises, running or lifting anything heavier than your baby.

Much of the weight gained in pregnancy is baby, placenta, fluid and blood, which goes in the first weeks. The rest usually comes off over several months. Expecting your old weight back in a few weeks leads to crash diets.

6 rules for new mothers

  1. Do not skip meals. Keep easy snacks ready for busy days: fruit, boiled eggs, dahi, roasted chanay.
  2. Protein at every meal. Daal, eggs, chicken, fish, milk and dahi help recovery and keep you full.
  3. Keep iron foods in. Many mothers are anaemic after delivery. Daal, chana, meat, eggs and green leafy sabzi, with lemon.
  4. Drink to thirst. A glass of water at every feed is an easy habit.
  5. Enjoy traditional foods in small amounts. Panjiri, halwa and ghee-rich dishes are very high in calories.
  6. Sleep when you can. Short sleep increases hunger and sugar cravings.

Your mood matters too

Feeling tearful for a few days after delivery is common. If low mood, worry or loss of interest lasts more than two weeks, or you have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, tell your doctor or family straight away. Diet comes second to your wellbeing. For pregnancy itself, see the pregnancy diet plan.

Ask your doctor first if

  • You delivered less than 6 weeks ago and have not had your check-up
  • You had heavy bleeding, anaemia, high blood pressure or sugar in pregnancy (ask your doctor first)
  • Your baby is not gaining weight well
  • You have a fever, a painful or red wound, or feel very low or hopeless (see a doctor now)
  • You have diabetes or thyroid disease and take medicines

In these cases a general chart can be wrong for you. Book an online consultation.

After pregnancy diet: common questions

When can I start losing weight after delivery?

Give your body the first six weeks to heal and wait for your post-natal check-up. After that, most mothers can start a gentle plan. After a C-section, start walking as your doctor advises, and begin harder exercise only when your doctor says the wound has healed.

Can I lose weight while breastfeeding?

Yes, slowly. Breastfeeding uses extra energy, roughly 330 to 400 calories a day, so mothers often lose some weight naturally. A gradual loss of about ½ kg a week does not usually affect milk supply. Very low calorie diets, fasting and diet pills are not advised while breastfeeding.

Is panjiri good after delivery?

Panjiri gives energy from ghee, sugar, flour and nuts, which is why it is traditional after delivery. It is very high in calories. A small portion a day is fine; large daily amounts make weight loss very hard.

Which foods increase breast milk?

There is little strong evidence that any single food increases milk. Milk supply depends mostly on frequent, effective feeding. Eat regular balanced meals, drink to thirst, and ask a doctor or lactation adviser if you are worried about supply.

Should I keep taking iron and calcium tablets?

Many mothers are advised to continue iron and other supplements after delivery, especially after heavy bleeding. Follow your doctor's advice, and do not stop or start supplements on your own.
