PCOS diet plan: a Pakistani diet chart for PCOS
A PCOS diet plan aims for steady blood sugar: regular meals, small portions of whole-grain roti or rice, protein at every meal, plenty of sabzi, and much less sugar and maida. If you are overweight, losing 5–10% of your weight often improves periods and other PCOS symptoms.
Why diet matters in PCOS
Many women with PCOS have insulin resistance: the body needs more insulin to keep blood sugar normal. High insulin makes weight gain easier and can disturb hormones and periods. Food that raises blood sugar slowly, eaten at regular times, helps keep insulin lower.
6 rules of a PCOS diet
- Do not skip meals. Three meals and one or two small snacks keep blood sugar steady.
- Choose whole grains. Chakki atta, daliya, oats and brown rice instead of maida, white bread and rusk.
- Pair carbs with protein. Roti with daal, egg, chicken or dahi, never roti alone with chai.
- Fill half the plate with vegetables. Sabzi and salad add fibre that slows sugar absorption.
- Cut sugar first. Chai sugar, mithai, bakery items and cold drinks raise insulin the most.
- Move every day. A daily walk plus 2–3 days of strength exercise improves insulin sensitivity even before weight changes.

PCOS, weight and pregnancy
For women with PCOS who are overweight and want to conceive, a modest weight loss can help ovulation. Diet supports fertility treatment; it does not replace it. If you are trying to conceive, plan your diet together with your gynaecologist and a dietitian, and see the pregnancy diet plan once you are pregnant.
Check your BMI
Uses the Asian BMI ranges, which are lower than the Western ones because health risks start at a lower weight in South Asians.
BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not separate muscle from fat, and it is not used in pregnancy.
Send my BMI to a dietitianTalk to a dietitian first if
- You are pregnant, trying to conceive, or on fertility treatment
- You take metformin, insulin or other medicines for sugar
- You also have a thyroid problem
- You have PCOS but are not overweight (lean PCOS needs a different plan)
- You are under 18
In these cases a general chart can be wrong for you. Book an online consultation.
PCOS diet: common questions
Can diet cure PCOS?
No diet cures PCOS. Diet and activity help manage it: they can improve periods, weight, skin and blood sugar. Many women also need treatment from a gynaecologist, and diet works alongside it.
Can I eat roti and rice with PCOS?
Yes. You do not need to stop roti or rice. Choose chakki atta over maida, keep rice to about half a plate, and always eat them with protein and vegetables so blood sugar rises slowly.
How much weight loss helps PCOS?
If you are overweight, losing 5 to 10 percent of your body weight often improves periods and other symptoms. For a 70 kg woman, that is 3.5 to 7 kg.
Should I stop milk and dairy with PCOS?
There is no strong evidence that all women with PCOS should stop dairy. Plain dahi and milk without sugar fit well in most PCOS diets. Avoid sweetened dairy drinks.
Do I need supplements for PCOS?
Only if your doctor advises them after tests. Supplements are not a replacement for diet, activity and medical treatment.
