Cholesterol diet chart: what to eat to lower LDL and triglycerides
To lower cholesterol, replace ghee, fried food and bakery items with measured plant oil, eat more oats, daliya, daal, chana, fruit, sabzi and nuts, and have fish twice a week. For high triglycerides, also cut sugar, cold drinks and mithai. Many people see a change in 4 to 12 weeks; recheck after about 3 months.
What actually lowers cholesterol
The diet change with the strongest evidence is replacing saturated fat (ghee, butter, fatty red meat, cream, bakery fat) and trans fat (vanaspati, fried bakery items) with plant oils, fish, nuts and legumes. Adding soluble fibre (oats, daliya, daal, chana, rajma, apple) lowers LDL further. Food cholesterol in eggs matters less than most people think. Check your numbers on the lipid profile page.
7 rules of a cholesterol diet
- Measure cooking oil. Use vegetable oil, about 1 teaspoon per person per meal, not ghee or vanaspati.
- Start the day with soluble fibre: oats or daliya.
- Eat daal, chana or lobia every day.
- Eat fish twice a week (baked or grilled, not deep fried).
- A small handful of nuts instead of biscuits or namkeen.
- Cut sugar and refined flour to bring triglycerides down.
- Walk 30 minutes on most days and lose weight slowly if you are overweight.

High triglycerides: what to change first
Triglycerides respond to sugar and refined carbohydrates more than to fat. Take sugar out of chai, stop cold drinks and packaged juice, keep mithai occasional, and cut rice and naan portions to about a quarter of the plate. Limit alcohol. Losing 5 to 10% of body weight and walking daily often brings triglycerides down. Very high levels (above 500 mg/dL) need a doctor.

Diet and cholesterol medicine
A statin is often needed after a heart attack or stroke, with diabetes, or with very high LDL. Diet makes the medicine work better, but never replaces it. Do not stop or change a dose without your doctor.
Check your BMI
Uses the Asian BMI ranges, which are lower than the Western ones because health risks start at a lower weight in South Asians.
BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not separate muscle from fat, and it is not used in pregnancy.
Send my BMI to a dietitianSee a doctor first if
- You have had a heart attack, stroke or stent, or have diabetes (you need a doctor-led plan, often with medicine)
- Your LDL is very high, or high cholesterol runs in your family
- You have kidney, liver or gallbladder disease
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You take a statin or other cholesterol medicine and want to change your dose
In these cases a general chart can be wrong for you. Book an online consultation.
Cholesterol diet: common questions
Cholesterol kam karne ki diet kya hai?
Ghee, tali hui cheezein aur bakery items kam karein; daal, chana, oats, daliya, sabzi, phal aur machli zyada khayein. Is page par triglycerides wale hissay mein Urdu khulasa bhi diya gaya hai.
How quickly can diet lower cholesterol?
Many people see LDL fall in 4 to 12 weeks of consistent changes, and a repeat lipid profile after about 3 months shows the effect. The size of the drop varies; some people with high genetic cholesterol also need medicine.
Can I eat eggs with high cholesterol?
Most people can eat up to one whole egg a day as part of a healthy diet; the American Heart Association says dietary cholesterol matters less than saturated and trans fat. People with diabetes, heart disease or very high LDL should ask their doctor and may need to eat fewer yolks.
Which foods lower cholesterol the most?
Foods rich in soluble fibre (oats, daliya, daal, chana, rajma, apple, guava), nuts such as almonds and walnuts, fish twice a week, and a switch from ghee and fried food to measured plant oil. Plant sterols, found in some fortified products, add a small extra drop.
What should I avoid with high triglycerides?
Sugar, mithai, cold drinks, juice, white bread and large portions of rice and naan raise triglycerides the most. Alcohol also raises them. Weight loss of 5 to 10% and regular walking often bring triglycerides down.
Do I still need a statin if I follow this diet?
Diet helps, but if your doctor has prescribed a statin because of heart disease, diabetes or very high LDL, keep taking it. Diet and medicine work together. Never stop a statin on your own.
Is a 7-day cholesterol diet menu enough to fix it?
A week is only a starting point. Cholesterol drops with changes you can keep for months. Use the 7-day menu as a pattern, repeat it with different sabzi and daal, and recheck your lipid profile after about 3 months.
