Normal blood pressure, and a diet chart for high BP
Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. High blood pressure is usually diagnosed at 140/90 or more on repeated readings. To lower it with food: cut salt to under 5 g a day (one teaspoon in total), eat more sabzi, fruit, daal and low-fat dairy, use less ghee, and lose weight if needed.
Blood pressure normal range chart
| Category | Top number (systolic) | Bottom number (diastolic) |
|---|---|---|
| Low (if you have symptoms) | Below 90 | Below 60 |
| Normal | Below 120 | and below 80 |
| Elevated | 120 to 129 | and below 80 |
| High (most guidelines) | 140 or more | or 90 or more |
| Very high: urgent care | 180 or more | or 120 or more |
The American guideline (ACC/AHA 2017) calls 130 to 139 / 80 to 89 stage 1 high blood pressure; the European guideline (ESH 2023) starts at 140/90. One high reading is not a diagnosis: measure on several days, seated and rested.
Where the salt in a Pakistani diet comes from
- Salt added while cooking salan, daal and sabzi, often more than needed.
- Achar, chutney, papad, nimko, namak pare and chaat masala.
- Bread, bakery items, instant noodles, ketchup, soy sauce and stock cubes.
- Fast food, karahi and tikka from restaurants.
Taste buds adjust in 2 to 3 weeks. Reduce salt slowly and add flavour with lemon, garlic, ginger, mint, dhania and black pepper.

Pakistani food swaps for high blood pressure
Small changes to everyday food, without a separate menu.

| Extra salt added at the table | Salt only while cooking, measured with a spoon |
| Ketchup, soy sauce, stock cubes, instant noodles | Home-made tomato chutney, garlic, ginger, herbs |

The DASH idea, in desi food
The DASH diet, tested in large trials, lowers blood pressure with more fruit and vegetables, low-fat dairy, whole grains, daal and nuts, and less salt, ghee and sugar. In a Pakistani kitchen that means: two to three fruits a day, half the plate sabzi, chakki atta, a katori of dahi daily, and less frying. Losing extra weight adds to the benefit; start with the Pakistani diet plan for weight loss. If your cholesterol is also high, see the lipid profile guide.
Check your BMI
Uses the Asian BMI ranges, which are lower than the Western ones because health risks start at a lower weight in South Asians.
BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not separate muscle from fat, and it is not used in pregnancy.
Send my BMI to a dietitianSee a doctor first, or go now, if
- Your reading is 180/120 or more, or you have chest pain, breathlessness or sudden weakness (emergency)
- You have kidney disease (potassium-rich food and salt substitutes may not be safe)
- You have heart failure and a fluid limit
- You are pregnant with high blood pressure
In these cases a general chart can be wrong for you. Book an online consultation.
High blood pressure diet: common questions
What is normal blood pressure?
Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. 120 to 129 over less than 80 is called elevated. Many guidelines, including those followed in Pakistan, diagnose high blood pressure at 140/90 or more on repeated readings; the American guideline starts at 130/80.
What are the symptoms of high blood pressure?
Usually none, which is why it is called a silent condition. Some people get headaches or dizziness. Severe headache, chest pain, breathlessness, weakness on one side, or blurred vision with very high readings (180/120 or more) need emergency care.
What are the symptoms of low BP?
Low blood pressure (usually below 90/60) can cause dizziness when standing up, weakness, blurred vision, nausea or fainting. Drink enough water, get up slowly, eat regular meals and see a doctor, especially if you take BP tablets.
How much salt per day is safe?
WHO advises less than 5 g of salt a day for adults, about one level teaspoon in total, including the salt already in food. Most Pakistani adults eat much more, mainly from cooking salt, achar, nimko, bread and packaged food.
Can diet lower blood pressure without medicine?
Diet and weight loss can lower blood pressure a lot, often by 5 to 10 points. Some people with mild high BP manage without medicine; many still need tablets. Never stop BP medicines on your own.
Is this a heart patient diet chart?
Yes, the same rules suit most heart patients: less salt, less ghee and fried food, more sabzi, fruit, daal and whole grains. Heart failure patients may also need a fluid limit; follow your cardiologist.
