Dengue diet: what to eat and drink in dengue fever

In dengue fever, drinking enough is more important than any food: about 2.5 to 3 litres a day for most adults (ORS, water, coconut water, soup, fresh juice). Eat small, soft meals such as khichdi, daliya, yakhni, eggs, dahi and fruit. There is no food that cures dengue; watch for warning signs and see a doctor.

Small frequent meals for late pregnancy: khichdi, dahi, fruit, nuts and water

Why fluids come first in dengue

Dengue can make fluid leak out of blood vessels, especially around days 3 to 7, when the fever is coming down. This is the critical phase: the patient may seem better, but blood pressure can drop. Enough fluid by mouth, every few hours, lowers this risk.

  • ORS (from a pharmacy, mixed exactly as written on the packet) is the best home drink.
  • Water, coconut water, nimbu pani, fresh juice, soup, yakhni, lassi and milk all count.
  • Keep a simple chart: how many glasses, and how many times the patient passes urine. Very little urine is a warning sign.

Best foods for a dengue patient

  • Soft carbohydrates: khichdi, daliya, rice with daal, soft chapati, boiled potato.
  • Protein for recovery: eggs, moong or masoor daal, chicken yakhni, dahi, milk, paneer.
  • Fruit: papaya, kinnow, malta, anar, banana, kiwi and guava, washed and fresh.
  • Vegetables: well-cooked lauki, tori, kaddu, palak and carrots.

Appetite is usually poor. Offer small amounts often instead of three big meals.

Pakistani food swaps for dengue diet

Small changes to everyday food, without a separate menu.

Instead ofTry
Cold drinks and packaged juiceORS, nimbu pani, coconut water, fresh juice
Oily salan, pakoras, biryaniKhichdi, daliya, yakhni, boiled vegetables
Many cups of tea or coffeeWater, soup and ORS through the day
Painkillers like aspirin or ibuprofenOnly paracetamol, and only as your doctor advises
Papaya leaf juice instead of the hospitalProper check-ups and platelet tests; leaf juice is not a treatment

Platelets, papaya leaves and kiwi: what is true

Platelets fall in most dengue cases and usually recover on their own after the critical phase. No food has been shown to raise them fast. Papaya leaf extract has some small studies behind it, but it is not a replacement for platelet tests and medical care. Kiwi, pomegranate and goat milk are fine as normal food, but they are not treatments.

After dengue, many people feel weak for weeks. Rebuild with protein and iron-rich food; see iron-rich foods.

Go to hospital now if

  • You have severe stomach pain, keep vomiting, or cannot drink
  • You have bleeding from gums or nose, blood in vomit or stool, or black stool
  • You feel very drowsy, restless, cold and clammy, or pass very little urine
  • Your platelets are falling fast or your doctor has advised admission
  • The patient is a baby, pregnant, elderly, or has diabetes, kidney or heart disease

In these cases a general chart can be wrong for you. Book an online consultation.

Dengue diet diet: common questions

What should a dengue patient eat?

Soft, light food in small meals: khichdi, daliya, soup and yakhni, eggs, daal, dahi, fruit and plenty of fluids such as ORS, water, coconut water and fresh juice. The most important part of the dengue diet is drinking enough, because dehydration makes dengue more dangerous.

How much water should a dengue patient drink?

Most adults need about 2.5 to 3 litres of fluid a day during dengue fever, spread through the day, unless the doctor gives a different amount. Count ORS, water, juice, soup and milk. Children need amounts set by their doctor.

Does papaya leaf juice increase platelets?

A few small studies suggest papaya leaf extract may raise the platelet count a little, but it is not a proven treatment and it does not prevent dengue complications. Do not use it instead of medical care or regular platelet tests.

Which foods should be avoided in dengue?

Oily, spicy and fried food, cold drinks, too much tea or coffee, and anything not fresh or clean. Avoid painkillers other than paracetamol (aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac) because they raise the risk of bleeding.

What is the normal platelet count?

A normal platelet count is about 150,000 to 450,000 per microlitre. In dengue it often falls between day 3 and day 7. Your doctor decides what level needs hospital care; food alone does not raise platelets quickly.

When does appetite come back after dengue?

Usually within one to two weeks after the fever ends. Many people feel weak for a few weeks. Keep eating small, protein-rich meals (eggs, daal, chicken, milk) to rebuild strength.
