Jaundice diet chart: what to eat and what to avoid
In jaundice, eat light, low-fat, home-cooked food in small frequent meals: khichdi, daliya, rice with moong daal, boiled sabzi, dahi, egg white and fruit, with plenty of safe fluids. Avoid fried food, red meat, street food, alcohol and all herbal liver tonics. Diet supports recovery; the cause needs a doctor.
Why food matters in jaundice
Jaundice means bilirubin has built up, usually because the liver is inflamed or the bile duct is blocked. The liver handles fat digestion, so fatty food often causes nausea during the illness. Appetite drops just when the body needs energy to repair. The diet therefore has three jobs: keep energy and protein up, stay low in fat while the liver recovers, and avoid anything that adds to the liver's load.
The biggest mistake: desi totkay and "liver tonics"
Herbal powders, unlabelled syrups and some traditional remedies are a recognised cause of drug-induced liver injury, and they can turn a recovering liver worse. Do not take anything, including painkillers, without asking the doctor treating you. Paracetamol is handled by the liver, so even that needs the dose your doctor allows.

Pakistani food swaps for jaundice diet
Small changes to everyday food, without a separate menu.
| Instead of | Try |
|---|---|
| Fried food, paratha, samosa, karahi | Boiled, steamed or lightly cooked food |
| Red meat, kaleji, nihari, paye | Moong daal, dahi, egg white, small chicken portions |
| Street food and roadside juice | Home-made food and boiled or bottled water |
| Herbal "liver tonics", desi totkay | Only what your doctor prescribes |
| Alcohol and paracetamol beyond the prescribed dose | Nothing without the doctor's approval |
Coming back to normal food
Once the yellow colour fades and SGPT falls, add fat back slowly: a little oil in salan, then eggs and chicken as usual. Rebuild strength with protein at every meal (see protein-rich foods). If liver tests stay high after recovery, ask about fatty liver and see the fatty liver diet.

Jaundice diet diet: common questions
What should a jaundice patient eat?
Light, low-fat, easily digested food in small frequent meals: khichdi, daliya, boiled rice with moong daal, soft chapati, boiled sabzi, dahi, egg white, and plenty of fluids such as boiled water, nimbu pani and fresh fruit. Keep fried and heavy food out until the doctor says the liver tests are improving.
Which foods should be avoided in jaundice?
Fried and oily food, red meat and organ meats, heavy ghee-rich salan, street food and unhygienic juice, alcohol, and any herbal or "liver tonic" product not approved by your doctor. Many herbal remedies are themselves a cause of liver injury.
Is sugarcane juice good for jaundice?
It is a traditional remedy and it does give fluid and energy, but there is no evidence it treats jaundice. Roadside sugarcane juice is a common source of hepatitis A and typhoid in Pakistan because of unclean water and ice. If you want it, have it made hygienically at home.
Can a jaundice patient eat eggs and daal?
Yes. Protein is needed for the liver to repair, and most patients can eat egg white, moong or masoor daal, dahi and small portions of chicken. Only patients with advanced liver disease and confusion (encephalopathy) need protein changed, and that is decided by the doctor.
How long does the jaundice diet last?
Usually until the yellow colour fades and the liver tests come down, often 2 to 6 weeks in hepatitis A or E. Return to normal food gradually. Tiredness can last longer.
What causes jaundice in Pakistan?
Most commonly hepatitis A and E from contaminated water and food, hepatitis B and C, medicines and herbal products, gallstones blocking the bile duct, and in newborns, normal or pathological newborn jaundice. The cause decides the treatment, so tests matter.
