Kidney stone diet chart: what to eat and what to avoid

The most important kidney stone diet step is water: 2.5 to 3 litres a day, more in summer. Keep normal milk and dahi with meals, cut salt, limit large amounts of palak, nuts and chocolate, eat less meat, and add lemon. Do not stop calcium from food; that makes most stones more likely.

A balanced Pakistani lunch plate: one chapati, daal, chicken salan, salad and raita

Know your stone type

  • Calcium oxalate (most common): water, less salt, normal calcium with meals, moderate oxalate.
  • Uric acid: water, less meat and organ meat; see the uric acid diet.
  • Infection and cystine stones: need medical treatment and a specialist plan.

If your stone was removed or passed, ask the doctor to test it. It tells you which food rules matter for you.

Pakistani food swaps for kidney stone

Small changes to everyday food, without a separate menu.

3 to 4 glasses of water a day10 to 12 glasses (2.5 to 3 litres), more in summer
Cutting out milk and dahiNormal milk and dahi with meals (calcium binds oxalate)
Achar, nimko, packaged food, extra saltMeasured salt; lemon, herbs and spices for taste
Large daily portions of palak, nuts, chocolateSmall portions, eaten with a dairy food
Cold drinks and sweet juicesWater, lemon water, coconut water in moderation
Vitamin C tablets in high dosesFruit; no high-dose supplements unless prescribed

Pakistani summers and stones

Heat, long working hours and too little water make urine concentrated, which is why stones are common in hot months. Keep a 1-litre bottle with you and refill it three times a day; drink more on hot days and after prayer or exercise. Salty snacks and cold drinks increase the risk, so swap them for water and lemon water.

See a doctor first, or go now, if

  • You have stone pain with fever, chills or vomiting (go to hospital)
  • You pass little or no urine, or have only one kidney
  • You have chronic kidney disease or a fluid limit
  • Your stone type is uric acid, cystine or infection stone (needs a specific plan)

In these cases a general chart can be wrong for you. Book an online consultation.

Kidney stone diet: common questions

How much water should I drink with kidney stones?

Enough to pass at least 2.5 litres of urine a day, which for most adults means about 2.5 to 3 litres of fluid, more in Pakistani summers or with sweating. Urine should look pale, like light lemon water.

Should I stop milk and calcium if I have kidney stones?

No. Most stones are calcium oxalate, but cutting calcium raises the risk because calcium in food binds oxalate in the gut. Keep normal dairy (about 1,000 to 1,200 mg calcium a day from food), eaten with meals. Calcium tablets are different; take them only if prescribed.

Which foods cause kidney stones?

Too much salt, too little water, large amounts of meat, sugary drinks, and for calcium oxalate stones, large amounts of high-oxalate foods such as palak, beetroot, nuts, chocolate and very strong tea. Your stone type, if tested, tells which matters most.

What are the symptoms of a kidney stone?

Severe pain in the side or back that moves to the lower belly or groin, coming in waves, blood in the urine, nausea or vomiting, and burning or frequent urination. Pain with fever or chills is an emergency.

Is lemon water good for kidney stones?

Yes. Lemon and other citrus contain citrate, which helps prevent calcium stones. Lemon water without sugar is a good way to drink more fluid.

Does tomato cause kidney stones?

Tomatoes are not high in oxalate and are fine in normal amounts. Removing seeds is not needed for stone prevention.
