Uric acid diet chart: normal range, symptoms and what to eat
Normal uric acid is about 3.4 to 7.0 mg/dL in men and 2.4 to 6.0 mg/dL in women. To lower it, limit organ meats (kaleji, gurda), red meat, prawns and sugary drinks, drink 2 to 3 litres of water, choose low-fat dairy and lose weight slowly if you are overweight. Daal and sabzi are fine.
What uric acid is, and why it rises
Uric acid is a waste product made when the body breaks down purines, which come from our own cells and from food. The kidneys remove it in urine. It rises when the body makes too much or the kidneys remove too little. Common reasons in Pakistan: extra weight, frequent red meat and organ meat, sugary drinks, low water intake, some medicines (water tablets), and kidney disease. Family history matters too.

Pakistani food swaps for uric acid
Small changes to everyday food, without a separate menu.
| Instead of | Try |
|---|---|
| Kaleji, gurda, maghaz, paye | Chicken or eggs in small portions |
| Nihari, mutton karahi several times a week | Mutton or beef once a week at most, in small amounts |
| Cold drinks, packaged juice, sweet shakes | Water, lemon water, lassi without sugar |
| Prawns and sardines | Rohu or other white fish occasionally |
| Crash diets and long fasts | Steady weight loss of ½ kg a week |
During a gout attack
Rest the joint, keep it raised, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth, drink water and see your doctor for pain medicine. Avoid meat-heavy meals and sugary drinks until it settles. Losing weight helps prevent attacks, but very fast weight loss and long fasts can trigger one, so aim for about ½ kg a week. For a full plan, see the Pakistani diet plan for weight loss.
See a doctor first if
- You have a hot, swollen, very painful joint with fever (it may be an infection)
- You have kidney disease or kidney stones
- You take diuretics (water tablets) or low-dose aspirin
- You have repeated gout attacks (you may need medicine, not only diet)
In these cases a general chart can be wrong for you. Book an online consultation.
Uric acid diet: common questions
What is the normal uric acid level?
Most labs give about 3.4 to 7.0 mg/dL for men and 2.4 to 6.0 mg/dL for women. Ranges differ a little between labs, so read the range printed on your report. People with gout are usually treated to keep uric acid below 6 mg/dL.
What are the symptoms of high uric acid?
Many people have no symptoms. When uric acid crystals form in a joint, it causes gout: sudden, severe pain, swelling, redness and heat, often in the big toe, ankle or knee, often starting at night. High uric acid can also cause kidney stones.
Can I eat daal with high uric acid?
Yes, in normal portions. Studies have not linked purines from daal, beans and vegetables such as palak and peas to gout the way meat and seafood are. One katori of daal a day is fine for most people.
Which foods increase uric acid most?
Organ meats (kaleji, gurda, maghaz), large amounts of red meat, some seafood (prawns, sardines), alcohol, and drinks sweetened with sugar or fructose, including cold drinks and packaged juice.
How much water should I drink?
Most adults with high uric acid do well with 2 to 3 litres a day, unless you have heart or kidney disease and your doctor has limited fluids. Pale yellow urine is a good sign.
Can diet alone control gout?
Diet helps lower uric acid and attacks, but many people with repeated gout attacks also need medicine such as allopurinol. Take it as prescribed; do not stop it during an attack unless your doctor says so.
