Hair fall diet: foods, deficiencies and tests that matter
Diet-related hair fall usually comes from low iron (ferritin), vitamin D, zinc, B12, too little protein or a crash diet. Eat protein at each meal (eggs, daal, dahi, chicken, fish), add iron foods with vitamin C, keep chai away from meals, and test ferritin, haemoglobin, vitamin D, B12 and TSH before taking supplements. Hair takes 3 to 6 months to respond; patchy bald spots or an itchy scalp need a dermatologist.
Why hair falls: diet is only one cause
Hair is made mostly of the protein keratin, and growing it is a low priority for the body. When the body is short of iron, protein or calories, or stressed, it pushes hair into a resting phase and sheds it about 2 to 3 months later. This is why hair fall often shows up after a crash diet, fever, delivery or surgery and not during it.
| Cause | What you notice | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Telogen effluvium (shedding after a trigger) | Diffuse thinning and lots of hair in the comb, 2 to 3 months after crash dieting, dengue, typhoid, high fever, delivery or surgery | Time (6 to 12 months), enough protein, iron and calories, treat the trigger |
| Iron deficiency | Tiredness, pale skin, thinning, heavy periods, craving ice | Test ferritin and haemoglobin; iron foods; iron tablets only if the doctor prescribes |
| Thyroid disease | Diffuse thinning, dry hair, weight change, cold or heat intolerance | TSH test and treatment; see thyroid diet |
| PCOS (high androgens) | Thinning at the parting and crown, acne, irregular periods, excess facial hair | Medical care, weight and blood sugar control; see PCOS diet |
| Pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) | Gradual widening of the parting in women; receding temples in men; runs in the family | A dermatologist; diet does not treat it |
| Alopecia areata or scalp disease | Round bald patches, scaling, redness, itch | A dermatologist; diet does not treat it |
Only the first two rows, and partly thyroid and PCOS, respond to food and nutrient correction. That is why testing first saves time and money.
Nutrients linked to hair fall, and where to get them
| Nutrient | Role | Pakistani foods |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | Hair is keratin; too little protein pushes hair into shedding | Eggs, daal, chana, dahi, milk, chicken, fish, soya chunks |
| Iron | Needed by the hair follicle cells; low ferritin is common in women | Daal, chana, palak, red meat, kaleji, dates, gur; eat with lemon or kinnu |
| Zinc | Repair and growth of hair follicles | Meat, eggs, chana, pumpkin seeds, cashews, dahi |
| Vitamin D | Involved in follicle cycling; deficiency is very common | Sunlight, egg yolk, oily fish, fortified milk; test and dose by your doctor |
| Vitamin B12 | Red blood cell formation; low in vegetarians | Milk, dahi, eggs, fish, meat |
| Omega-3 fats | Scalp health; anti-inflammatory | Fish, walnuts, alsi (flaxseed) |
| Vitamin C | Helps absorb iron from plant food | Kinnu, amrood, lemon, tomato, capsicum |
For details on each nutrient: iron-rich foods, vitamin D, vitamin B12. Ranges: haemoglobin and ferritin.
7 rules of a hair fall diet
- Test first: ask for CBC, ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and TSH. Fix what is low; do not guess with supplements.
- Protein at every meal: about 1 g per kg of body weight a day. An egg, a katori of daal, dahi or a palm of chicken or fish at each meal.
- Pair iron with vitamin C and keep chai away: tea and coffee cut iron absorption. Drink them at least an hour away from meals.
- Never crash diet: fewer than about 1,200 calories, skipping meals or 10 kg in a month is a classic trigger. If you want to lose weight, do it slowly. See the weight loss diet.
- Include healthy fats: a few teaspoons of oil plus nuts, seeds and fish help absorb fat-soluble vitamins.
- Be careful with supplements: too much vitamin A, zinc or selenium can cause hair loss, and biotin can distort lab tests.
- Be patient and consistent: allow 3 to 6 months. Photograph your parting monthly in the same light.
Sample one-day hair fall diet chart
| On waking | 1 glass of water; 4 to 5 soaked almonds | start light |
|---|---|---|
| Nashta | 2 eggs (boiled or omelette in little oil) with 1 chapati and a glass of milk; or oats with milk, nuts and a fruit | protein and zinc |
| Mid-morning | 1 orange, kinnu or amrood and a handful of roasted chanay | vitamin C helps iron |
| Lunch | 1 katori daal or chana, 1 katori palak or other sabzi, 1 chapati, salad with lemon, 1 katori plain dahi | iron and protein |
| Evening | 1 fruit or a small bowl of chana chaat; chai at least 1 hour after lunch | tea blocks iron |
| Dinner | Chicken, fish or kaleji (liver, small portion once a week) with sabzi and 1 chapati; a few walnuts or 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds | zinc and omega-3 |
Pakistani food swaps for the hair fall diet
Small changes to everyday food, without a separate menu.
| Instead of | Try |
|---|---|
| Skipping nashta or lunch to lose weight fast | Three regular meals with protein, in a moderate calorie deficit |
| Chai right after daal, chana or meat | Chai 1 hour after meals, lemon or fruit with the meal |
| Biscuit, rusk or paratha as the main nashta | Egg, dahi, oats or chapati with daal |
| Cold drinks and packaged juice | Water, lassi, a fresh fruit |
| Only white rice and potato meals | Daal, chana, sabzi and chapati with a smaller rice portion |
| Biotin or hair gummies bought from a pharmacy "for hair" | Test first (ferritin, vitamin D, TSH); correct what is low, with a doctor |
| Strict "no oil, no fat" diet | 3 to 5 teaspoons of cooking oil a day plus nuts, fish and egg |
Common myths about hair fall
- "Washing hair causes hair fall." Shed hairs are already loose and drop when you wash or comb. Gentle washing does not cause it.
- "Hair oil stops hair fall." It can reduce breakage and feels good, but it does not treat deficiency or hormones.
- "Onion juice, rice water or one superfood fixes it." No strong evidence; a balanced diet and fixing the cause work better.
- "Hair fall after delivery or dengue is permanent." It is usually temporary.
- "More supplements, more hair." Only when you are deficient, and too much can worsen shedding.
See a doctor or dermatologist first if
- Hair is falling in patches, leaving round bald spots, or the scalp is itchy, red, scaly, painful or has sores
- Hair loss started suddenly together with weight change, tiredness, feeling cold or hot, or palpitations: check thyroid and blood count first
- You are a woman with irregular periods, acne or excess facial hair (PCOS needs a doctor)
- You have a very low haemoglobin, are pale and breathless, or have heavy periods
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding: do not start iron, zinc, vitamin A or any supplement without your doctor
- You take a regular medicine and the hair fall began after starting it (ask the doctor; do not stop it yourself)
- The shedding lasts more than 6 months, or you are under 18 and losing hair
In these cases a general chart can be wrong for you. Book an online consultation.
Hair fall diet: common questions
How many hairs is it normal to lose a day?
Losing about 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Hair grows in cycles: most hairs grow for years, rest and then shed. You are shedding more than normal if you see clumps in the shower or on the pillow, a much thinner ponytail, or a widening parting.
Which deficiency causes hair fall?
The ones most often linked are iron deficiency (low ferritin), low vitamin D, zinc deficiency, low B12 and too little protein or calories. Thyroid disease and PCOS are common non-diet causes. Iron deficiency is especially common in Pakistani women, so a ferritin and haemoglobin test is the first step.
How long does hair take to regrow after changing diet?
Slowly. Shedding from a trigger such as a crash diet, fever, dengue, typhoid, surgery or delivery starts about 2 to 3 months after the trigger and usually settles on its own within 6 months. After a deficiency is corrected, expect to wait 3 to 6 months to see less fall and up to 12 months for visible regrowth, because hair grows about 1 cm a month.
Does hair fall after delivery or dengue go away?
Usually yes. Heavy shedding 2 to 4 months after childbirth, a high fever such as dengue or typhoid, or major stress is called telogen effluvium. It is temporary in most people and recovers within 6 to 12 months. Eat enough protein and iron, avoid crash dieting, and see a doctor if it lasts longer than 6 months.
Which tests should I do for hair fall?
Ask a doctor, ideally a dermatologist, about a CBC (haemoglobin), ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin B12, TSH, and for women with irregular periods or acne, PCOS hormones. Zinc and others only if the doctor suspects them. Take a test before you buy supplements, because taking iron or zinc when you are not low does not help and can harm.
Is biotin good for hair fall?
Biotin deficiency is rare and biotin pills have not been shown to help hair in people who are not deficient. High-dose biotin can also give false results in blood tests, including thyroid tests and troponin (a heart test), so tell your doctor if you take it. Eggs, nuts and daal supply all the biotin you need.
Can too many supplements cause hair loss?
Yes. Too much vitamin A (including from multivitamins, retinoid medicines and a lot of liver), selenium or zinc can themselves cause hair loss. Do not take high-dose "hair, skin and nails" products without a test.
Do onion juice, rice water, methi dana or hair oils work?
Good evidence is lacking for onion juice and rice water on the scalp. Oiling can make hair feel softer and reduce breakage, but it does not stop shedding from deficiency or hormones. Methi (fenugreek) is a healthy food, but it is not a proven hair treatment. Look for the cause first.
Is hair fall in women with PCOS or thyroid diet related?
Both cause hair loss. In PCOS, higher androgen hormones thin the scalp hair in a pattern at the crown and parting, and blood sugar control and weight loss help. Thyroid disease causes diffuse thinning that improves when thyroid levels are treated. See our PCOS and thyroid diet pages, and ask for a TSH test.
Does stress cause hair fall?
Severe or lasting stress, poor sleep and sudden weight loss can trigger shedding. Sleep 7 to 8 hours, eat on time, walk daily and get help for anxiety or depression.
